Cambria Construction in San Francisco, CA | Millwright Builders

We install, fabricate, and repair Cambria quartz countertops across San Francisco, including Noe Valley, the Marina, Sunset, and Bernal Heights. What makes our Cambria work different here is that we template around the city’s raised-foundation Victorian stock, seismic retrofit constraints, and the old cisterns and brick footings that surface when you dig. If you’re planning a Cambria countertop or island in a pre-1950 home, call (866) 925-0334 for a free estimate. We’re an independent shop, not a Cambria affiliate, and we’ll tell you straight what the slab can and can’t do in your specific house.

Why San Francisco Residents Choose Us for Cambria Service

Cambria surfaces live or die by the flatness of what’s underneath them. In San Francisco, that substrate is rarely flat. Victorian and Edwardian floors have settled for a century, raised foundations have shifted, and out-of-level cabinets are the rule, not the exception. We’ve templated enough of these old kitchens to know that a Cambria slab set on an unshimmed, out-of-plumb cabinet run will chip at the sink cutout within the first year. We flatten first, then template. That discipline comes from Noel Castañeda, our owner, who grew up in South San Francisco and trained in construction trades at Skyline College before spending two decades on residential work across the Peninsula. He’s seen what fog-belt moisture and old framing do to finishes, and we build our Cambria installs to survive exactly that.

We’re local to San Francisco, which means we don’t send a different crew from a different county to template your kitchen and then hand the install to a sub we’ve never met. That’s not how we operate. We measure, fabricate, and set the slab with our own crew. Cambria sales & service is a core part of what we do, and the same people who template your counters are the ones who carry the slab through your front door.

Common Cambria Construction Problems We Solve in San Francisco

  • Seam and edge chipping at sink cutouts. In older San Francisco kitchens where the cabinet run has drifted out of level, a Cambria slab set without flattening the substrate will crack or chip at the undermount sink opening. We re-level before we template, and we cut sink openings with the slab fully supported.
  • Resin dulling and hazing on darker surfaces. Near the coast, in the Sunset and the outer Richmond, wind-driven rain blows through original, poorly sealed Victorian-era windows. Where raw ocean air hits darker Cambria finishes repeatedly, the surface can haze. We’ll assess the exposure and recommend where sealing makes sense.
  • Cracking at unsupported overhangs. San Francisco homeowners often want a waterfall island or a cantilevered bar with a deeper overhang than the slab can safely carry without steel or corbels. Cambria is dense, not infinitely strong. We’ll specify the support before the slab is cut, not after it cracks.
  • Moisture wicking and discoloration at slab edges. Many San Francisco homes sit on raised foundations with open crawlspace air. Moisture wicks up through the structure and darkens seam adhesive at the slab edge over time. On pre-1950 construction, we use adhesive rated for that condition and check the perimeter before setting.
  • Template delays from below-grade discoveries. In Noe Valley and Bernal Heights, demo for a new Cambria-topped island regularly exposes 1900s redwood cisterns or brick foundations that weren’t on any plan. The pour can’t happen until those are documented, and the template waits on the new slab. We’ve worked through that sequence enough to plan for it from day one.

Cambria Service in San Francisco: What Local Conditions Mean for Your Equipment

The one thing that separates Cambria installation in San Francisco from the same job in Oakland or Daly City is what’s underneath the floor. A huge share of our service area sits on raised foundations, unreinforced masonry, and soft-story wood framing. When you set a long Cambria run in a kitchen that spans a load-bearing wall or a shifted foundation line, any movement in the house telegraphs straight into the slab. In the Marina, where sandy soils and soft-story buildings make settlement common, we see counter runs crack at the seam when the slab below is poured too thin or the cabinets aren’t tied to the framing. Our Cambria installs account for that movement before the slab goes down: we check the floor for deflection, the cabinets for racking, and the framing for soft-story conditions. Oakland and Daly City have hillside and seismic exposure too, but San Francisco’s combination of fog, salt air, pre-1950 stock, and mandatory soft-story retrofits makes the substrate work here a different job entirely. If you’re on a raised foundation or in a soft-story building, that’s the first thing we look at on a Cambria estimate.

Cambria Models & Products We Service in San Francisco

We fabricate and install across the full Cambria line, with the most demand in San Francisco for Cambria Brittanicca, Torquay, Ella, and Whitehall. Brittanicca’s white field with gray and gold veining shows in a lot of Noe Valley and Bernal Heights kitchens, and warm Beige Torquay has been popular in Chinatown, Pacific Heights, and Presidio Heights remodels. Here’s the thing about Cambria: it’s a slab product, so there are no OEM “parts” in the appliance sense. The real decisions are slab grade, seam adhesive, and undermount sink and cooktop hardware. We source premium color-matched adhesive and quality aftermarket sink supports instead of cheap generic epoxy, and we stock the adhesives and supports most common in San Francisco so most jobs don’t wait on a supply delay from out of state. When a chip or crack can be repaired with a color-matched seam, we’ll say so rather than push a full replacement.

Cambria Service Pricing in San Francisco

What you’ll pay for Cambria work in San Francisco depends on the slab grade, the number of seams, the overhang support required, and what we find underneath the cabinets. Here are the market-calibrated ranges we work within for Cambria-related construction across San Francisco, South San Francisco, and the broader Peninsula:

Scope of Work Typical Range
Countertop Installation $2,360 – $7,670
Kitchen Island Installation $3,540 – $11,800
Backsplash Installation $945 – $2,950
Bathroom Vanity Installation $945 – $3,540
Kitchen Remodel (including Cambria) $16,520 – $53,100

Every estimate includes a site visit, floor and cabinet level checks, and a written line-item quote so you see exactly where the money goes before we cut anything. Call (866) 925-0334 for an exact number on your kitchen, island, or vanity.

Noel puts it this way: “Build it right the first time – the Peninsula weather will find out if you didn’t.” That applies double to a slab that has to survive fog, salt air, old framing, and the occasional 1906-era surprise under the floor.

FAQs – Cambria Construction in San Francisco

Can Cambria quartz be installed on a raised-foundation Victorian kitchen without the seams cracking?
Yes, as long as the substrate is flattened and the seams are placed away from structural transition points. We check for floor deflection and cabinet racking before templating. Call (866) 925-0334 if you want us to assess your specific floor.

Does the marine fog and salt air near the Marina and Sunset affect Cambria surfaces?
Salt air and fog moisture mostly affect the surrounding wood, windows, and seam adhesive, not the Cambria slab itself. But raw ocean air can haze darker Cambria finishes over time, so we’ll recommend whether sealing makes sense for your exposure.

What if we discover an old cistern or brick foundation while demoing for a new Cambria island?
You pause, document what’s there, and bring in the right engineer or preservation review. In San Francisco, we’ve hit redwood cisterns and early 1900s brick footings on more than one Visitacion Valley Cambria service call, Noe Valley, or Bernal Heights job. It pushes the template back by weeks, but skipping the documentation gets you a failed inspection. We schedule around that possibility from the start.

Is a Cambria waterfall island safe on a narrow SF infill-lot kitchen?
Safe, yes, as long as the overhang is supported and the slab is set on a level substrate. Narrow infill lot kitchens often force deeper overhangs to create seating, and that’s where people get into trouble. We’ll specify corbels or steel where the cantilever exceeds what the slab can carry on its own.

Are you an authorized Cambria installer?
No. We’re an independent fabrication and installation shop serving San Francisco, not affiliated with or authorized by Cambria. That independence means our judgment isn’t tied to what the manufacturer wants sold. Call (866) 925-0334 for an honest read on your project.
