Why South San Francisco Homeowners Choose Belgard Construction
We provide independent Belgard construction, repair, and installation service across South San Francisco, from paver driveways on the flatlands to patio walls holding back the slopes below Sign Hill. Most Belgard failures we see in this city aren’t product defects. They’re base and drainage problems, and that’s what we actually fix. Think of us as your Belgard-focused contractor who treats the layer under the paver as seriously as the paver itself. No manufacturer authorization, just a decade-plus of seeing what coastal fog, clay soil, and winter runoff do to hardscape, and building so it doesn’t happen again. Call (866) 925-0334 for a free estimate on any Belgard project.
Why Trust Millwright Builders for Your Belgard Construction?
Belgard makes a disciplined product line. Their pavers and wall units are engineered, color-consistent, and tested for freeze-thaw and compressive load. What the manufacturer can’t control is what happens beneath the unit, and with Belgard in South San Francisco, that’s where hardscape lives or dies. Our crews install Belgard Dimensions, Catalina Slabs, Weston Wall, and Dublin Cobble to spec, but we don’t stop at the manufacturer’s base chart. We account for what the chart doesn’t know: the marine clay that sits under much of the Westborough and Avalon neighborhoods, the slope creep on Sign Hill, and the winter water table that rises after three straight weeks of rain.
Noel Castañeda, Millwright Builders’ owner, grew up in Sunshine Gardens watching the industrial corridor along the bay take shape. He completed his construction trades training at Skyline College and San Bruno Belgard service work has kept him busy for the better part of two decades doing residential and light commercial work across the Peninsula. Build it right the first time, he says. The Peninsula weather will find out if you didn’t. That lesson gets applied to every Belgard base we compact, every joint we sand, every wall we batter back into the hill. We’re not guessing at what the fog belt does to hardscape. We’ve watched it for years.
We also carry a broader lens than a hardscape-only contractor. When a Belgard patio is part of a larger project, a new paver driveway tied into a foundation repair, or a retaining wall that has to coordinate with grading, fencing, and drainage, that’s Millwright Builders’ wheelhouse. One contract, one accountable team, from the paver course up. We’re an independent Belgard service in Daly City and nearby, not an authorized dealer. That means we recommend what serves your project, not what moves inventory. When Belgard is the right product, we specify it with confidence. When something else fits better, we say so.

Common Belgard Construction Problems We Fix in South San Francisco
- Joint sand washing out of Belgard Dublin Cobble driveways. Dublin Cobble has a tumbled, old-world profile with wider joints than a smooth paver. Those joints look great when filled with polymeric sand, but on South San Francisco slopes, water sheets across the surface instead of draining through, and the sand gets pulled out joint by joint. The cause is almost never the sand. It’s a base that hasn’t been graded to daylight and a drainage layer that isn’t moving water off the field. We fix the drainage, then re-sand.
- Efflorescence bloom on smooth Belgard Catalina Slabs. Catalina Slabs are large-format and nearly flat, so any white mineral haze reads immediately. That haze is salts rising with moisture from below and crystallizing on the face. It’s not a paver defect. It’s trapped water under the unit, often because the sub-base was placed over clay without an outlet or the bedding course held water against the slab. We address the moisture path, not just the surface stain.
- Belgard Weston Wall units leaning or bulging on hillside lots. Weston Wall is a modular retaining system, but no wall unit holds a slope by itself. The wall leans when geogrid isn’t stepped back into the cut at the right spacing, or when the grid is too short for the retained height. On Sign Hill and the Grand Avenue corridor, where the city’s building department requires geotechnical reports for any addition or deck, wall failures are common enough that we see them monthly. A failing Weston Wall usually means the reinforcement was never built to geotech spec.
- Polymeric sand cracking and pulling from joints within a year. Polymeric sand fails early when the pavers shift because the base wasn’t compacted in lifts. We see this constantly on patios where installers ran a plate compactor once over a six-inch lift and called it done. Fine for a walkway. On a paver driveway in South San Francisco, base compaction in proper lifts is what keeps the sand in the joint and the paver from rocking under a car’s weight.
- Belgard Dimensions pavers moving after the first wet season. Dimensions pavers are modular and interlock well, but interlock only works when the edge restraint holds and the base is stable. On lots where the native soil is expansive clay, winter rain makes the ground swell, then dry summer shrinks it. Pavers don’t crack; they drift. A thin base over clay means the whole field travels. We rebuild with a thicker, well-drained base and a deeper excavation that gets down to more stable ground.
Belgard Parts & Our Repair-vs-Replace Approach
For anything face-visible, we use Belgard’s own paver, wall, and joint-sand systems. Matching color, texture, and dimension across product runs is not something you fake with generic material. The base, though, is a different story. Belgard doesn’t manufacture compactable aggregate, and we’re happy to source Class II base and drainage rock from local South San Francisco suppliers because that aggregate is what determines whether the paver above it stays put. The manufacturer cares about the unit. We care about the system.
Our repair-versus-replace call is straightforward. If a Dublin Cobble driveway is lifting because of base failure but the pavers themselves are sound, we’ll pull the field, rebuild the base, and relay the original units. We did exactly that for a Westborough homeowner whose pavers were wicking water into their garage after every rain. The problem was roughly two inches of base over clay with no drainage outlet. We rebuilt with eight inches of compacted Class II base and a channel drain at the low edge. Most of the original Belgard pavers went right back into place. We don’t sell tear-outs when a relay will do. If you need a quote, call (866) 925-0334.
Our Belgard Service Process – Step by Step
- 1
Diagnostic walk. We put a level on the field, check the edge restraint, probe the base depth in a few spots, and look at how water moves across the surface. If we can, we check what’s under the pavers with a core or an exploratory pull. Belgard failures are usually traceable, and we trace them before we propose anything.
- 2
Base and drainage plan. We write a specific scope: excavation depth, base material and lift thickness, compaction method, slope direction, drainage outlet. On sloped South San Francisco lots, this step often includes channel drains, French drains, or a curtain drain at the uphill edge. We don’t skip it.
- 3
Relay or new install. We set the base in lifts, compact each one, lay bedding sand, and place Belgard units to the pattern spec. Joint sand goes in after the field is compacted, not before. Edge restraints go in before final compaction, not as an afterthought.
- 4
Joint stabilization and test. We re-sand the joints, wet-cure the polymeric sand per the manufacturer’s instructions, and water-test the surface to confirm water goes where it should. On retaining walls, we check for plumb, batter, and drainage behind the wall before we call it done.
- 5
Warranty write-up. We document what we built, what’s under it, and what we’ll stand behind. If there’s a future issue, we come back and look at our own work first. That’s the job. Call (866) 925-0334 to schedule your assessment.

AfterBelgard Products We Service & Install in South San Francisco
Our crews work regularly with Belgard service in Brisbane and the line most South San Francisco drives and patios call for. That includes Belgard Dimensions pavers for interlocking driveway and walkway fields, Belgard Catalina Slabs for large-format patios and pool decks, Belgard Weston Wall for retaining and garden walls on graded lots, and Belgard Dublin Cobble for that tumbled, older-street look that suits a lot of the early-20th-century housing stock on the flatlands. We keep joint sand and edge restraint material in the trailer and source pavers to order so color lot and series match. Whether you’re building new or repairing an existing Belgard install, we’ll match the product and build the base to last.
We Also Service These Brands
Belgard is a regular part of our hardscape work, but Millwright Builders isn’t a single-brand shop. We also install and finish KraftMaid cabinetry, Cambria and Silestone countertops, and Kohler fixtures. So if your Belgard patio is one piece of a larger renovation, a kitchen redo with a paver driveway out front, or a bathroom with a hardscape entry, you’re not juggling contractors. Same crew, same contract, same accountability.
FAQs – Belgard Construction Service in South San Francisco
No. Belgard pavers are designed for a flexible base, not a poured concrete slab. What they need in South San Francisco is a properly compacted aggregate base, typically six to eight inches for a driveway and four to six for a patio, over a stable subgrade. A concrete slab under pavers can actually trap water and cause worse problems on our clay-heavy lots. Call (866) 925-0334 if you want us to evaluate what’s under your existing hardscape.
Because water is moving across the surface fast enough to carry the sand, usually due to insufficient slope or no drainage outlet at the low edge. Dublin Cobble’s wider joints hold less sand to begin with, and on sloped South San Francisco lots that water just strips it. Re-sanding alone lasts a season. The fix is drainage correction and base regrading, then fresh polymeric sand. Call (866) 925-0334 and we’ll trace the water first.
Usually, yes. Belgard color lots can shift slightly between production runs, so we order from the current run and blend from the existing field, pulling some of the original pavers into the new stretch so any variation reads as intentional. If your pavers are a discontinued color or heavily weathered, we’ll be straight about the match quality before you spend anything.
Efflorescence, which happens when moisture under the paver carries salts up through the unit and deposits them on the face as the water evaporates. Catalina Slabs are smooth and large, so it shows. It’s not a defect, and it’s not just cosmetic luck. The fix is addressing the moisture under the slab, not scrubbing the top. On South San Francisco clay, that usually means improving the sub-base drainage. Call (866) 925-0334 and we’ll assess what’s holding water under your slabs.
On a sloped South San Francisco lot, we typically start at eight inches of compacted Class II base and go thicker if the subgrade is clay or the slope exceeds what a standard detail sheet assumes. The depth is only half the equation. Slope direction, drainage at the low edge, and edge restraint matter just as much. On Sign Hill lots, where the city requires geotechnical reports for additions and decks, a driveway base often needs to be engineered as part of the same drainage plan.
